How We Get This Data

Data Collection

We collect installation costs from homeowner discussions across online communities. Each quote is manually reviewed for completeness: it must include a dollar amount, a location (state at minimum), and enough context to determine the system type.

Cleaning & Validation

Quotes under $1,000 or over $100,000 are excluded as likely errors or commercial installations. When homeowners report multiple quotes, each is recorded separately. Equipment-only costs (without installation) are excluded.

Limitations

This data is self-reported and may not be nationally representative. Homeowners who discuss costs online tend to be more engaged and tech-savvy. Sample sizes vary by state — states with fewer than 5 quotes are excluded from comparisons. All figures are nominal (not adjusted for inflation).

Updates

New quotes are added monthly as they're collected. The dataset grows over time, improving coverage and reliability. Last updated: March 2026.
